Airdate: June 24, 1967 The “Saturday night edition of Shebang“ is shot out of a cannon today with the Summer of Love’s inescapable sound of “Light My Fire”. While the original, 7-plus-minute version has been out for about 5 months on the “The Doors” album, this shortened, radio-friendlier version is just entering the Top 40 today at #24 on its way to #1 next month. American Bandstand regulars dancing today are Famous Hooks at 2:42, Forest Hutchins & Joanne Edmunds at 3:32 and Bud Schwimmer & Olivia Favela in matching gold outfits in the front at 3:37. Casey Kasem has a beard today for a part he is playing in the movie “The Glory Stompers”. Jim Morrison was one of the musical geniuses that lived in Laurel Canyon in the 60’s, a small section of the Santa Monica Mountains that separates Hollywood and the LA basin from the San Fernando Valley (many of the 60’s Bandstand dancers lived in “the Valley”). Some of Morrison’s neighbors included Peter Tork, Mickey Dolenz, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan (Flo & Eddie), David Crosby and Cass Elliot to name a few. I highly recommend the 2020, 2-episode documentary about this special place in time titled “Laurel Canyon” on Epix. Bonus: Name the song in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 this week with these lyrics: “You try to be smart, then you take it to heart 'Cause it hurts when your ego is deflated Ooh, you don't realize that it's all compromise And the problems are so overrated“ Thank you for watching!
