Part 28 carries us from the desert warmth of Yuma to the cool coastal air of San Diego, where eleven days at Chula Vista RV Park become one of the most memorable extended stays of the journey. Climbing out of the Imperial Valley on I-8, G2 tackles the long ascent to Laguna Summit through the boulder-strewn Cuyamaca Mountains before descending toward the Pacific and a marina-side campsite overlooking San Diego Bay. Border Patrol checkpoints and agricultural inspections add new roadside experiences along the way, reminders of how close we are to the international boundary. San Diego quickly becomes an immersion in wildlife, history, and coastline. Three full days at the San Diego Zoo reveal a world of lush gardens, pandas, primates, and aerial tramways, while SeaWorld blends marine exhibits with roller coasters and soaking river rides. A journey north to the Safari Park offers open-range habitats, a cheetah sprint captured in slow motion, and a rare glimpse of Nola, one of the last northern white rhinoceroses. Closer to the water, we explore Coronado and the historic Hotel del Coronado, wander Old Town’s shops and adobe streets, and reconnect with family along the crowded Mission Beach boardwalk at sunset. The USS Midway provides a towering lesson in naval history, its flight deck filled with aircraft and sweeping views of the harbor. Between outings, everyday travel life continues — grocery runs to unfamiliar regional chains, long walks along the marina trails, and a welcome delivery of mail and favorite bread from home. Part 28 is a coastal interlude of animals, ships, beaches, and family — a place where the pace slows, the scenery changes, and the adventure shifts from desert solitude to the energy of one of California’s great waterfront cities.
