Artistic vs. Corporate Authority | Demon's Souls Remake Review. As we get deeper into this growing trend of constantly remaking games, at some point players and critics are going to need to ask the question of whether or not video games are an artform, or simply entertainment products? I'm sure if you ask IGN, Eurogamer, and all the other outlets that are so eager to champion this remake trend, they would answer an artform, and yet all of the discussion around remakes, like Demon's Souls Remake, emphasize that the originals are merely outdated products that need to be "modernized." In today's review I certainly go into the details and differences between the real Demon's Souls by Fromsoft, and this publisher-ordered remake by Bluepoint -- including catching a lot of design inaccuracies (outside of graphics) that I don't think have been discussed. But rather than focusing only on the details, I also think its really important to take a step back and look at a project like this, which clearly has no artistic authority to begin with, and analyze what makes a video game "remake" valid in the first place? The term is conveniently extremely broad so I think it's really important to sort through the many factors that separate "remake" projects from one another, especially in terms of how much artistic authority is present in the project. Also I think it's really important to recognize the role remasters play in the current gaming landscape, and how it is clearly much more valid to have remastered the original Demon's Souls (trapped on the PS3 still), than Bluepoint making a bunch of work for themselves for the sake of trying to act like peers of FromSoft and of course to help give the illusion that the PS5 has some kind of new exclusive Souls game. Also there is something to be said about Sony essentially suppressing an extremely significant game (real Demon's Souls) for the sake of selling their remake and getting Fromsoft out of the picture. As it stands right now you can get the remake exclusively on the PS5, of course, but what you cannot get on the PS5, or PS4, or PC, or any other platform, is the real game which is now only in print in the form of digital sales on the PS3 PS Store which is only accessible on the PS3 console itself (the storefront isn't even on PC).
