The hymn tune “Trentham”, was composed by Robert Jackson in 1878. Robert Jackson was born in 1842 and died in 1914 in Oldham, Lancashire. During his life, he served as church organist at the organist at St. Mark’s Church at Grosvenor Square in London, and played at St. Peter’s Church in Oldham, Lancashire for 46 years. The most common text to this tune is "Breathe on Me, Breath of God", by Edwin Hatch the same year the hymn was composed in 1878. It is listed in at least 275 hymnals with this setting. This hymn is performed on a reed organ, more commonly called a pump organ. The organ was made in Berlin, Ontario Canada in 1897. There have been some questions as to why I am crossing my hands at the beginning and the end - this is because I am using a very soft muted stop in the treble, and a 'reedy' sounding stop in the bass. The bass stops on this organ are all on the louder side, so this is my solution for making these louder stops as a solo - which is another new sound for this instrument. If I were a good enough player, I would have played the melody with my left hand and accompaniment in the right, but this was easier and it sounds the same. If I appear a little shaky during this recording it is because I’m just recovering from a nasty spell of the flu... :-)
