It was a Wednesday in August. Work had been sucky. I don't remember the specifics of why. It's like Maya Angelou said - I don't remember what was said or what was done, but I do remember the way it made me feel. I needed to be anywhere else but here, so Marvel invited me for a hike. Our plan for this one was to head up to what was then Savage Gulf State Natural Area, but is now Tennessee's newest State Park. We'd start at the Stone Door Ranger Station, hike down into Big Creek Gulf via The Stone Door, and complete a roughly ten mile loop. When we woke up that morning the forecast said it was a 20% chance of rain for the area, so I packed a hoodie and an umbrella - just in case. I had assumed 20% chance of rain meant that if it did rain, it would do so lightly or for a short time. 6.5 miles into our hike the heavens opened and they did not stop for another two hours. We were four miles from the parking lot. Four very wet miles. I am very glad that the rain didn't start until we were already on our way out of the gulf - I can imagine the dry creek crossings at the bottom weren't so dry, or even safe, after the rain started.
