After speaking with the author of this story, it has been confirmed that the latter portion which he wrote—the story of the young Marine beginning at 12:18—is intended to be a fictional piece of writing. The story was inspired by his father's actual deployment experiences during the Vietnam war, where, while stationed on Okinawa, a Marine from his unit did go AWOL. The Marine was of course not devoured by a fox monster, but much of the story and the Japanese legends and superstitions about the Kitsune remain true to reality.
