Learn how to protect the birds in your garden by making a fat ball feeder without nets! Hubert Fontaine, our expert gardener, will guide you step-by-step through this simple and effective process. 🌿 With the arrival of winter, fat balls for birds become ubiquitous. While they are a great source of nourishment, they can unfortunately trap birds like tits, causing fatal injuries. In this video, we present an ingenious solution to feed the birds safely. Why Avoid Nets? Tits and other birds can get their feet or beaks caught in the netting of fat balls, which can be fatal. Following the recommendations of the LPO (League for the Protection of Birds), we explain how to feed birds safely from November to March. Required Materials: Galvanized chicken wire (50 cm high, mesh size 0.5 to 0.7 mm) A strip measuring 20 cm by 50 cm Fat balls without nets Steps to Make the Feeder: 1. Cut a strip of chicken wire measuring 20 cm by 50 cm. 2. Form a tube with a diameter slightly larger than that of a fat ball (~5 cm). 3. Thread the fat balls after removing the nets. Advantages of the Feeder: Increased safety for the birds Prevents fights among birds due to the stacking of fat balls Easy access for tits Installation: Place the feeder in an open area to allow robins to peck at the leftovers while keeping an eye out for potential predators.
