CHAPTERS: Introduction: 0:00 - 1:59 Numbers: 2:00 - 2:12 Vocabulary: 2-13 - Special Thanks to Yost Chi Tangut Language: The Tangut language was a now-extinct Sino-Tibetan language of the Qiangic branch, once spoken by the Tangut people who founded the Western Xia dynasty (1038–1227) in what is now northwestern China, mainly in present-day Ningxia, Gansu, and parts of Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia. It was written in a unique and complex script consisting of over 6,000 logographic characters, resembling Chinese but entirely distinct in form and structure. The Tangut language was used for official purposes, religious texts, and literature, especially Buddhist works. Though it fell out of use following the Mongol conquest of Western Xia, it has since become a subject of scholarly interest for its rich manuscript tradition and linguistic uniqueness within the Tibeto-Burman family. Tangut People and Culture: The Tangut people were an ancient Tibeto-Burman-speaking ethnic group that rose to prominence by establishing the Western Xia dynasty, a powerful state that coexisted with the Song, Liao, and Jin dynasties in medieval China. They were known for their strong Buddhist devotion, particularly Vajrayana Buddhism, which deeply influenced their art, architecture, and literature. Tangut society was hierarchical and militarized, with a blend of nomadic and sedentary traditions, reflecting their roots and the multicultural environment of their empire. The Tanguts developed a distinctive culture, integrating Tibetan, Chinese, and Inner Asian elements, which is evident in their temple murals, steles, and surviving texts. Though the Tangut state was ultimately destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century, their cultural legacy endures through archaeological finds and preserved manuscripts.
