Uncertainty often sparks curiosity, fueling both scientific discovery and personal growth. Samuel invites us to rethink how we approach the unknown, whether it is navigating health tests, understanding the complexity of protein structures, or applying statistics to make sense of messy data. By embracing uncertainty, we can unlock valuable insights and make better decisions, both in science and life. Samuel Wong is an Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo. As a researcher, he develops computational methods to extract scientific insights from large and complex datasets. Together with his research team, he tackles data science problems in diverse fields of application ranging from proteins and biological systems, to lumber and forestry, and even to music and sports. At UW, he has taught courses in probability, surveys, and building statistical models for data. Before becoming a professor, he grew up in Vancouver where he studied Math and Statistics at the University of British Columbia, and went on to complete a PhD in Statistics at Harvard University. Outside of work, you might find him playing Chopin on the piano, studying theology, having a game of chess, or most recently, getting immersed in fatherhood (with another baby coming soon!). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
