This video is designed to train your ear to hear the difference between the /f/ and /p/ consonant sounds. The /f/ and /p/ sounds take different mouth positions. The /f/ sound is made with the top teeth gently touching the bottom lip. The /f/ sound is unvoiced, meaning that the vocal cords are NOT active when making this sound. This sound has a breathy quality. The /f/ sound is a continuant sound - meaning you can continue to hold the sound as long as your breath lasts. The /p/ sound is also unvoiced, but the lips press together and release to make this sound. Next we practice minimal pairs - words that sound the same except for the /f/ and /p/ sounds. Listen to and repeat the minimal pairs in order to hone your ear and practice the proper mouth positions for each sound.
