My 850th video and also my last for 2025 comes from my 8th visit to Didcot Parkway on the Great Western Main Line, junction for both the Cotswolds Line and Cherwell Valley Line. Featuring services from Great Western Railway, CrossCountry Trains and some freight On the day of filming Penzance trains were on divert via Bristol Temple Meads due to engineering works between Castle Cary and Taunton Didcot Parkway opened originally as DIdcot on June 12th 1844 which was 4 years after the Great Western Main line got extended from Reading to Steventon which was also when the Cherwell Valley line to Didcot from Oxford opened. Originally at the time there were several intermediate stations between Didcot and Swindon including Steventon, Wantage Road, Challow, Ufffington, Shrivenham and Stratton Park However all of them closed on December 7th 1964 after being controversially axed by Dr Beeching at around the same time as the former Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway which had link from Didcot to Newbury was also closed. Didcot was renamed Didcot Parkway by British Rail on July 29th 1985 which at the time included a new station building and a new car park was built which the idea was intended to provide a Park and Ride service and also access to Didcot Railway Centre which can also be accessed via an underpass from the station. The present station car park which has up to 1800 spaces have been reconstructed in 2018 The station layout consists of 5 platforms dates from a complete overhaul for the arrival of the Electrification of the Great Western Main Line between 2014 and 2017. Platforms 1 and 2 are used by passing services nowadays Class 800 and 802 IETS mainly from Swansea along with occasional Bristol Temple Meads with services calling here are hourly services to and from Cheltenham Spa, Half Hourly Bristol Temple Meads with some extended to Weston-super-Mare and 1 every few hours Cardiff Central with only a few trains a day direct to Swansea or Carmarthen. Platforms 3, 4 and 5 are used by passing Freight services as well as both terminating services to and from London Paddington via Slough mainly provided by Class 387 Electrostars first operated to Didcot Parkway in January 2018 although in recent years can also provide other services to Swindon, Bristol Parkway and Cardiff Central. Hourly services to and from Oxford provided by Class 165 Turbos with 1 every 2 hours extended to Banbury terminate here with access via Didcot North Jn. Since May 2024 hourly direct IET services London Paddington to Oxford services with the London trains being served hourly from Worcester Foregate Street, Great Malvern and a few services a day from Hereford. IETs towards Oxford switch power modes at nearby Didcot East Jn whilst stopping services from Oxford towards London Paddington switch power modes on the Platform. CrossCountry Trains run from Bournemouth via Basingstoke to Reading to Manchester Piccadilly and occasionally workings to and from York, Newcastle and Nottingham respectively which most bypass Didcot Parkway. Between Didcot Parkway and where the Cotswolds Line bypasses the station is that of nearby Didcot Railway Centre which can be accessed easily via an underpass from the station itself. In the years to come Lumo services from London Paddington to Carmarthen will operate 5 return services a day along the GWML and South Wales Main Lines with 5 car Class 80x Hybrids with intermediate stops at Bristol Parkway, Severn Tunnel Junction, Cardiff Central, Gowerton and Llanelli which is due to operate from December 2027. Great Western Railway is due to be nationalised by Autumn 2026 according to DFT which in the long term will be rebranded into GBR (Great British Railways) from around 2029 which at the time of filming the process of rail reform is still ongoing. Didcot Parkway itself to some may look like a normal 5 platform station however with the passing services, freight and nearby Didcot railway centre it shouldn't be a surprise if it does keep you busy.
