Day 5 of solo camping in Alaska with my horse Sedona and dog Cooper. We had camped out at an ATV lot past Eureka Lodge and woke up to blue sunny skies! I got everyone their breakfast and we had a relaxing morning at our campsite. I slowly got Sedona ready for our trail ride exploring Old Man Creek Trail. This trail is also part of the Chickaloon-Knik-Nelchina trail system that connects to Squaw Creek, Gunsight Mt, Bellanger Pass, etc. You could ride for MILES and days. Although I love riding Sedona, it would be fun to come back one day to just rip on a four wheeler or snowmobile to quickly and easily cover miles and see all the places back there that I would love to see - and would be a multiple day trip with a horse. Having an older dog with me, the overnight trips are limited but that is totally ok! Old Man Creek trail is an ATV/OHV trail so it can be very rocky and it also had some steep parts up and down in the beginning. At the end of the video, I talk about how I went off Old Man Creek trail to try to loop back on another trail shown on my Gaia app. This trail seemed to have better, less rocky footing so we traveled along it for a short while before the terrain quickly changed and we had to navigate out of a bog. Luckily Sedona is such a good, smart, athletic horse to get herself out of that bog situation and I did my best to help her find solid footing and get out of her way. I was pretty disheartened to have gotten her into that situation. After our ride, we arrived back at the truck and all took naps. I decided due to some predicted oncoming rain that we would haul out and head towards Glenallen. My plan was to find somewhere to set up camp near Glenallen/Gakona. However we ended up just doing a slow and steady haul straight through to Nabesna Rd!!! I have been wanting to check out Nabesna and it was my first time in this area of Alaska. We drove down to about Mile 28 - passing really great campsites but I wanted something as close to Mile 28 as I could. I had read that after that mile (where Kendesnii Campground / Avens Lodge is) that there are some river crossings which you need a high clearance vehicle for and rivers can quickly change. I opted to not cross the river with my truck and trailer. Luckily, we found a great private campsite by a lake right at Mile 28, next to that Kendesnii campground). By this time it was almost 11 pm so I set up camp quickly with what remaining daylight we had and called it a night! Excited for the next day exploring Nabesna Rd. For rocky terrain I use @ScootBootsdownunder on Sedona. For day rides I don't always use back saddle bags, but when I do use them or whenever I do an overnight trip, I LOVE my @TuckerTrailSaddles saddle bags. They are very easy to use, have lots of pockets and space, and I love all the adjustable straps and clips. @insta360 footage of the ride as well!
