By Jordon Myers TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida student organization, Safe Home, held the first USF Slut Walk Oct. 30 and intends to hold them annually. “Slut Walk started in Toronto, Canada in 2011 and the platform was taken up in popular culture here in America by a celebrity named Amber Rose. And basically, it takes the word slut, which is a word that is used often to demean people, and it takes it back and uses it as a term of empowerment,” said Katie Shrum, the president of Safe Home. The walk was comprised of a large group of people, mostly USF students. They carried signs that were marked with messages standing against sexual violence and slut shaming. The attendees were escorted by USF Police Department Officers as they made their way from the Marshall Student Center to Cooper Hall and back. All the while taking part in chants advocating for unity and choice. The Slut Walk stood against rape culture, especially on college campuses. An issue that was elaborated upon by Brandi Lai, Secretary of Safe Home. “There’s a cultural narrative where women can’t go out at night without having someone with them, or they can’t go out at night without having a lot of clothing on so that they aren’t deemed as easy to get,” said Lai. Lai followed up her statement by saying that sexual assault happens everywhere, regardless of these factors.
