Created in 1975, Xiao and Drum at Sunset maintains the traditional style of the original music, evoking antique and classical imagery. The piece originated from one of the most popular instrumental works in Chinese music, originally a Pipa solo composition from the Qing dynasty. Subsequently, the solo piece was orchestrated, and its title was changed to pay homage to a poem of the same name by the Tang dynasty poet Zhang Ruoxu. The revised title comprises five evocative images: spring, river, flower, moon, and night. The piano version is based on the orchestral adaptation, yet it retains the title of the original solo work. In this piece, the composer skillfully employs idiomatic musical gestures to emulate traditional Chinese instruments such as the xiao, drum, pipa, guqing, and guzheng. The composition is crafted freely, akin to a fantasy, and comprises eight distinct sections seamlessly connected without pauses. At the beginning, the score indicates the absence of a time signature, replacing it with a unique marking that translates to “Senza Misura” in Chinese.
