What is Samter’s Triad? Well, the Samter's Triad (also known as Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease), refers to a group of symptoms that occur together as a result of taking aspirin or other NSAIDs, such as Ibuprofen, Aleve, Motrin, etc. The triad is characterized by bronchial asthma, nasal polyps and aspirin intolerance. The symptoms vary person to person but can be very serious and cause a person to have a severe allergic reaction. Typically, a person with Samter's triad develops asthma or nasal polyps following the ingestion of aspirin or other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen. These medications inhibit the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which is responsible for producing prostaglandins, and thereby compromise the blood vessels in the nose and lungs.
