The Stern-Gerlach experiment, conducted in 1922, has been one of the most important experiments in the evolution of quantum theory. The experiment, done by silver atoms which were deflected in an inhomogeneous magnetic field, had surprising results. Although it approved the spatial quantization predicted by Bohr-Sommerfeld method, the theory could not explain why the beam was split into two distinct lines. In fact, they would have expected to see a continuous pattern or odd numbers of lines on the glass plate based on this model. Two years later, in 1925, spin angular momentum was introduced that accounted for the results of this experiment.
