Hello there, welcome to Sailing NV, We’re a sailing family pursuing an unconventional dream of sailing around the world in our recently converted ex Vendée Globe Open 66. Join us this week after a thrilling 24 hours racing through the Torres Strait, where we find ourselves in a very dangerous situation in the Arafura Sea. We run into a giant fishing net at 10 knots in the middle of the night and get our 4.5-meter bulb trapped in it. The Arafura Sea is to the west of the Torres Strait, the narrow strip of water between Australia and Papua New Guinea, which is littered with reefs and has a big shipping channel to navigate. The Torres Strait passage was what we expected to be the most challenging part of our 2500nm journey from Vanuatu to Indonesia, and we were both relieved and excited to be out in the Arafura Sea for the first time in our lives. However, this part of the passage had its own challenges, as the first 300nm of it were only around 50m deep and full of fishing boats and their nets, some of which were many kilometers long. In these first couple of days, we saw plenty of fishing boats and their nets, which were marked with a variety of large floating markers buoys, flashing unpredictable multi-coloured lights, and AIS transmitters. These nets were often so large that they required many of these signals which they distributed at intervals along the net We’d heard stories from other cruisers that they’d come across some nets as long as 10km! So far, we’d managed to steer clear, but on our second night in this sea, we encountered a long line of lights heading north to south directly along our path. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, another AIS alarm appeared on our screens with a dangerous target warning. Before we knew it, we had sailed right into a net. We were sailing downwind at around 10 knots and it felt as if we’d collided with a wall made of rubber as we kind of bounced back. We took our sails down straight away and started to assess this potentially very dangerous situation... 00:00 - Intro 01:22 - Our first few days in the Arafura sea 04:07 - Our feast! 06:15 - Fishing boats and their nets 07:40 - The nightmare begins 18:16 - Free! 20:36 - Reflections ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoyed this video please consider supporting us on Patreon / sailingnv or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/saili... #sailing #boatlife #oceanpassage #fishingnet #sailingvlog #oceansailing #oceanwaves #oceanlife #danger #sailingnv
