Hans Oster stands as one of the most courageous and principled figures in the German resistance — a man who risked everything to stop Adolf Hitler long before most of Germany understood the scale of the disaster unfolding. Born in Dresden in 1887, he built a distinguished military career during the First World War and later joined the Abwehr, Germany’s military intelligence service. Although he initially believed the Nazis would restore Germany’s stability, the regime’s brutality, political purges, and attacks on personal freedoms quickly transformed him into one of its most determined internal enemies. Working closely with Wilhelm Canaris, Ludwig Beck, Henning von Tresckow, and later Claus von Stauffenberg, Oster became a central strategist behind multiple plots to overthrow Hitler. It was Oster who warned foreign diplomats about Germany’s planned invasions, who coordinated secret networks inside the army, and who supplied explosives later used in attempts on Hitler’s life. His moral clarity and direct defiance made him a rare figure in Nazi Germany: a high-ranking officer who refused to serve a criminal regime. When the July 20 plot failed in 1944, the Nazis launched a campaign of revenge. Oster was arrested, tortured, and finally executed at Flossenbürg concentration camp on 9 April 1945, only weeks before the end of the war in Europe. Forced to undress and hanged with a thin rope, he died with dignity, standing by his beliefs until the final moment.
