The Yamuna River, which flows through Delhi, is one of the most significant rivers in northern India. It originates from the Yamunotri Glacier in the Himalayas and travels across several states before entering Delhi. In the capital, the Yamuna plays a critical role in the water supply, agriculture, and culture of the region. However, it is also one of the most polluted rivers in India, especially in Delhi. The Yamuna faces severe pollution downstream of New Delhi. The city is one of the primary contributors to the contamination, with industries, sewage, and untreated wastewater being dumped directly into the river. It is estimated that approximately 58% of the pollution in the river comes from Delhi. A significant portion of the pollution comes from untreated sewage. Delhi generates millions of liters of sewage every day, much of which ends up in the Yamuna without proper treatment. Industrial waste, chemicals, and other hazardous materials also contribute to the river's deterioration. Encroachments along the riverbanks, including illegal settlements and buildings, have further contributed to the pollution and blocked the natural flow of the river.
