Comet ATLAS's (C/2019 Y4) moniker is an acronym for Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). It might become faintly visible to the naked eye under dark sky conditions by mid- or late April and easily visible through a telescope. I pointed my telescope and camera at it for 7 hours and 32 minutes to track and capture it's movement. This is not the doomsday comet that people are tying to hype it as nor is it the same as an asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. Comet ATLAS will only come within 72 million miles from Earth at its closest point. By mid-May, ATLAS will be second in brightness only to Venus. People in the Northern Hemisphere will have great seats from now right up until the comet reaches perihelion on May 31, 2020. The week of May 25 to 31 will be the week when we take the iconic pictures of Y4 and forge our memories of a lifetime. ATLAS will be literally diving past the Sun, brightening a magnitude per day.
