Get 50% OFF your first EFI Fundamentals course: https://hpcdmy.co/offery42 NA, supercharged, turbocharged and then V8 swapped, this Toyota ‘HPA86’ has seen its fair share of spanners over the last few years. With essentially a ‘stock car spec’ 450HP Toyota 1UZFE V8 under the hood and the core modifications done before our ownership, the HPA GT86 has an ever-growing list of parts and ‘to-do’s’ in order to build it into a class-competitive car, and also the team's skills along with it. In the previous owners hands the car saw its stock FA20 power plant supercharged, then turbocharged, and finally removed and replaced with a stock 4L 1UZFE V8 engine with an R154 5 speed transmission fitted behind it. 300HP wasn’t quite enough though, and it later received a modified 1UZFE which has the VVTi system removed in favour of a CNC ported head, more aggressive cams and valves to match, stronger H beam connecting rods and a GM LS V8 intake manifold. Stock pistons and a 10:1 compression ratio were retained in relation to the specs the 1UZ’s used in stock car racing adhere to just for ease of purchase etc for the previous owner and also leaving the car able to run on pump gasoline. Electronics were fitted by HPA some time ago, and include a MoTeC ECU with the Toyota 86 engine swap package, meaning all factory subsystems are retained and in use. Due to this car being street legal this was a requirement, and although we have taken things further in the last 12 months the car is still actually close to road legal with namely the aero and TTi GTO 6 speed sequential gearbox either needing paperwork or removal to turn this back into a ‘grocery getter’. Plans are underway to partner with Hartley Engines and Motorsport to once again update this chassis powerplant with a 3UZFE based build, giving us a little extra capacity and power without there being too much for the current tyre size to cope with.
