It basically allows them to keep their immune system robust and keeps them healthy. That bacteria does the same thing in human beings. We work the same way. So that's why things like Timothy hay as part of a high fiber diet is so important for Russians, Greeks, Herman's, Marginated, any of the arid species tortoises. Because it's the way they can keep their immune system robust. And help them keep under control the bad gut bugs, when they have all the positive gut flora in high quantities. The bad is kept at bay and they have plenty of bad from their natural environment as well. But it's why it's so important you feed your Russian tortoises a high fiber diet.
