Aldo Ciccolini plays Miserere, d'après Palestrina No. 8 from Liszt's Harmonies poetiques et religieuses. "It was 1835 that first saw the printed appearance into the Liszt canon of a work entitled Harmonies poetiques et religieuses. The title was derived from a collection of poems by Lamartine, and the piece is an extended work in a sort of free improvisation Liszt originally conceived it for piano and orchestra. A little over ten years later, in 1845, Liszt began work on a series of individual piano works that eventually were published in 1853 with the same title as the 1835 work— Harmonies poetiques et religieuses. The music of the original piece of that name is included in this set, only it is now retitled Pensees des marts and is broadened by the inclusion of a section of De Profundis, and "instrumental psalm" for piano and orchestra that Liszt had composed in 1835. All together, there are ten pieces in the final 1853 edition." ---Charles StanleyLeavens
