Walz says he’s “more hopeful” Operation Metro Surge will wind down this week

Gov. Tim Walz took questions Tuesday on Operation Metro Surge, describing the ongoing disruption and the toll he says it’s taking on Minnesotans — including what he called psychological damage tied to the federal ICE presence. Walz also discussed President Donald Trump’s approach, saying Trump views the situation as “a zero sum,” and added: “we are getting responses based on emotion.” Walz said it’s his understanding federal officials believe they did accomplish their mission. Walz said he and border czar Tom Homan are in daily communication, and that more state-federal communication has been happening. Walz said he hopes the operation winds down this week, adding: “they can’t keep kicking this down the road.” He also said: “I’m more hopeful than i have been” that the operation will wind down.
