Planning your Halloween costume? 🎃 Before you try those colored contacts or halloween lenses, make sure you know the risks to your eye health and eye care. Using decorative contact lenses, especially sclera lenses, can lead to complications if not handled properly, so learn how to use them safely this halloween costume season! Wearing decorative or “Halloween” contact lenses can put your eyes at serious risk — especially if they’re worn for long hours or overnight. Many of these lenses have very low oxygen transmissibility, meaning your cornea can’t get enough oxygen, which increases the risk of infection, swelling, and long-term damage. Sleeping in them or overwearing them makes these complications much more likely, including severe eye infections that can lead to vision loss. Another major concern is that many lenses sold online or from unregulated retailers are not properly manufactured, may not fit your eye safely, and can cause scratches, ulcers, or scarring. While these novelty lenses are classified as Class II medical devices and “cleared” for marketing by the FDA, they are not FDA-approved for safety or effectiveness, and counterfeit or poorly made lenses are common on sketchy websites. For your eye health, it’s safest to get any contact lenses — even decorative ones — through a licensed eye care professional who can ensure a proper fit and advise on safe wear.
