Derek Dow is more than just the flashy sneakers he wears. He’s a man with a mission to reach out and uplift others as he connects to his community though shoes. In this short documentary, we invite you to take a journey through the South-Side of Chicago, the sunny streets of Los Angeles, and the glitz of Las Vegas as Derek takes the viewer through a shoe fantasia and reacquaints himself with friends and family along the way. The African-American community has long been familiar with the flash of fashion, from Zoot Suits to Hammer Pants, there is definitely a unique style that is conveyed in the urban landscape which comes out of hardships and successes alike. Derek Dow, the director and lead subject in Beyond the Sole, has gone through his share of hardships and from that he has learned to embrace the world one sneaker at a time. The film starts out in South LA, in Derek's home, as he and his girlfriend, Alisha, go through Derek’s collection of more than 120 shoes. Derek is trying to decide which sneakers he will part with and give to a fortunate young individual with a size 10 foot. Later on, Derek hosts a ‘Sneaker Conversation’ forum to explore what others love about their sneaker collecting. Men and women alike discuss the pros and cons of collecting such in demand shoes and how they maintain their compulsion to buy. There we meet Quinn and Jamaal, two subjects we link up with later in the film. But its not all fun and games, there is also a dark side to sneaker culture - the violence it can breed is a very real thing that occurs. This won't keep Derek Dow down though, he uses his flair for fashion to mentor young boys and keep them out of harms way. You will see that Beyond the Sole is a fun film, at times introspective and very much relevant to popular culture. It’s meant to entertain and move the audience, but most of all keep them thinking beyond the sole.
