HUCHUY QOSQO The name Huchuy Qosqo comes from the Quechua word: "HUCHUY" which means small and "QOSQO" navel or center. It also refers to the location of the archaeological zone. Huchuy Qosqo is located in the agricultural aà community of the same name, near the town of Calca, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It is located at 3,550 meters above qsea level on a small plain in the upper third of the mountain. To reach this monument it is necessary to walk from the archaeological zone of Tambomachay, a walk that lasts 5 to 6 hours. The other alternative is to go by public bus to the town of Lamay and ascend for 2 and a half hours until arriving at the archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo. This archaeological complex is the most important in the sacred valley of the Incas after Ollantaytambo and Pisac. The ruins or terraces are impressive since it is located in the high part of the mountains; the conservation of the site is in good condition. Huchuy Qosqo has a peculiar architecture: the buildings have been built on polished stone bases with fine finish, clay plaster (they are the best preserved parts) and the highest floors are made of adobe. There is also a kallanka (rectangular enclosure that could measure up to 70 meters long. They were important state centers of at least 40 to 50 meters long (where Inca officials were housed). We can also find a remarkable building with two stone floors and an upper one of adobe. In the site there are also large terraces for agriculture. Places where they cultivated potatoes, corn, quinoa, among other products of the area. There is a very large square where they made offerings to mother earth and to the Apus (sacred mountain spirits). We can also appreciate a great Inca door that is the main entrance to Huchuy Qosqo, including a well preserved Inca road that leads from Tambomachay or chinchero (another very important place). According to the chroniclers it was the Inca Wiracocha who ordered the construction of the city of Huchuy Qosqo; probably in his old age since he felt tired and wanted to leave the government and move away from the hustle and bustle of the capital of the Tahuantinsuyo Empire (Cusco) to look for peace and tranquility in this place. This site was built on a territory occupied by several pre-Inca human settlements that, in time, would be dominated and incorporated into the Inca Empire.
