Bert Ralton plays what is undoubtedly his masterpiece on soprano saxophone - "Bella Figlia dell'Amore" from Act 3 of Verdi's 1851 opera Rigoletto. BERT RALTON AND HIS HAVANA BAND Bert Ralton - soprano sax, arranger, directing: Freddy Pitt and Jack Jackson - trumpets / Ben Oakley - trombone / Allen Warren - alto sax, baritone sax / Bill Barton - tenor sax / Frank Compton - piano / Joe Brannelly - banjo / Dick Escott - brass bass / Alec Cripps - drums Recorded London, March 24th, 1926 WA-3091-2 Rigoletto Columbia 3948 This recording demonstrates that classical music and syncopated dance music can be coerced into working together to produce something unique and quite stunning. Ralton arranged this chart himself and his approach in reworking "Bella Figlia dell'Amore" - sung by a quartet in its operatic form - for a dance band is quite ingenious. Ralton's end notes are a fitting triumph to an example of soprano sax playing at its finest. Sad to think that less than a year later Ralton was dead, accidentally killed in South Africa during a hunting trip. Jack Jackson, one of the trumpet players on this recording, was on the South African tour and the other band members asked him to play "Taps" at Ralton's funeral, but he broke down and couldn't finish the bugle call, such was his love and admiration for Ralton, who was fondly remembered by all the musicians who had worked with him.
