The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to a rare and magical phenomenon: synchronous fireflies. These fireflies flash in unison, creating a mesmerizing light show that is truly one of a kind. Our apologies, but the camera simply can't capture the full experience, you really have to be there to truly appreciate it. But we captured what we could. Enjoy. The synchronous fireflies in the Smoky Mountains are called Photinus Carolinus. They are one of only a few species of fireflies that can synchronize their flashing. The males flash in a repeating pattern of six to eight flashes, followed by a short 5 to 7 second pause. The females respond with a single flash. The synchronous fireflies in the Smoky Mountains can be seen from late May to early July. The best time to see them is around 9:30pm, when it is dark enough for the flashes to be visible. If you are planning to see the synchronous fireflies in the Smoky Mountains, there are a few things you should keep in mind: You will need to find a dark location. The fireflies are easily disturbed by light, so it is important to find a place where there is no artificial light. You should be respectful of the fireflies. Do not touch them or try to catch them. Just sit back and enjoy the show! Look for a location that is away from roads and other sources of light. Choose a spot that is near a stream or other body of water. Arrive early in the evening, before it gets too dark. The fireflies are most active around Elkmont Campground in the park. You can also find them in the Cataloochee Valley and along the Little River Trail. The park service offers guided tours of the synchronous fireflies in the spring.
