By request, my next entry in Summer of Prog is Breakfast in America by Supertramp - Certainly a well-loved album with classics like The Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger, Take the Long Way Home and Gone Hollywood. But is it truly a progressive rock album? #supertramp #breakfastinamerica #albumreview #progressiverock #historyofrock #progrock #summerofprog #jtcurtis #historyofrock Supertramp is an English band formed in 1970 helmed by Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, both of whom sing and play keyboards, Roger also plays guitar. Although they are the Lennon & McCartney of the group, they actually came from vastly different backgrounds and musical styles. This would play a part in their songwriting later on. They released their self-titled album and Indelibly Stamped in 1970 & 1971 respectively which were commercial disappointments. That changed in 1974 with the critically praised hit record Crime of the Century. This would establish their classic lineup with John Helliwell on sax, Dougie Thompson on bass and Bob Seibenberg on drums. Also the Wurlitzer piano would become their signature sound. The album featured musically adventurous tracks like the title track, School, Bloody Well Right and is really the album that gave Supertramp a progressive rock label, though the band denies it was a concept album. They followed this up with Crisis? What Crisis? and Even in the Quietest Moments... in 1975 & 1977 respectively. But in 1979, Breakfast in America gave the band their greatest commercial success. Gone Hollywood kicks off in the album in a prog-rock style. However, the more pop singles from the album, The Logical Song, Take the Long Way Home, Goodbye Stranger and the title track were all successful singles that shot the band into superstardom. They would follow this up with a successful live album cut in Paris. 1982's ...Famous Last Words... would be the last album with Roger, who was no longer seeing eye to eye with Rick, who would continue fronting Supertramp for several more albums. The two would reunite a smattering of times but never recorded or toured together again. Recently Roger has been involved in a legal battle with his bandmates over lost royalties. Nevertheless, Supertramp remains a well loved band in the history of rock.
