CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (KGAN/KFXA) - Over the past year, the Grant Wood Area Education Agency has supplied speech therapists in seven different counties with an iPad. While traditional games still help students develop their language skills, both Tablets and iPads are becoming great motivators when it comes to helping students with developmental speech needs. Our responsibility is to help the schools learn new technology and to implement them for the benefit of the students, George Held, the Communications Supervisor for Grant Wood Area Education Agency said. That s where iPads factor in to provide interactive, fun games that aide students in developing their speech. They re like really fun, and I enjoy them, second grader, Jett Sebetka said. Nancy Almasi, a speech therapy pathologist working at Prarie Heights Elementary explained that in addition to traditional games, the iPad has really aided her in motivating students and helping them make progress. I can take it to evaluate a child s speech and language, I can use it to do therapy, you know virtually anywhere, Amasi said. Amasi is also able to help parents continue the learning at home by sharing iPad games with them to use on their own devices. Its been a really positive response because I can give them really specific apps that really target their child s speech and language needs, Amasi said. The iPad speech therapy is working so well that both Sebetka and Hess seemed to forget they were still in school while they learned language skills with Amasi through the iPad game. I just really like most of all getting out of class,, Sebetka said as he laughed. And while students have fun, their skills are growing. Before it was pretty hard for me and now it s like pretty easy! Hess said. For parents looking to try out some of the apps, Amasi said there is a good place to start. Most of my apps fall under three main sites- Mobile Education Store Language Builder, Smarty Ears Speech and Language Apps, and Linguisystems Speech and Language Apps. If parents search those 3 sites, they will have access to a variety of apps, Amasi said. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Iowa's News Now on our social media pages: Iowa’s News Now on Facebook: / iowasnewsnow Iowa’s News Now on Twitter: / iowasnewsnow For more news & weather: https://cbs2iowa.com/ Send us news tips @ news@cbs2iowa.com
