This Hong Kong Festival Only Happens Once Every 10 Years!

Started the day off with some dim sum, and honestly, this spot was kind of a miss. The dishes didn’t taste fresh, the texture was off, and the flavors weren’t very balanced. I didn’t record it, but the place I went to the day before was much better. Later on, I found out that the Kam Tin Jiao Festival was happening about 40 minutes away. It only takes place once every decade, so I figured I couldn’t miss it. I made the trip over to see what it was about. The Kam Tin Jiao Festival is a traditional Taoist celebration in Hong Kong that dates back to the 17th century. It’s held once every ten years to pray for peace and prosperity. The entire area transforms with massive bamboo structures, ceremonial altars, lion dances, and Cantonese opera performances with full costumes and traditional weapons. The atmosphere was lively and packed with energy. There were food stalls everywhere, performances happening throughout the grounds, and a steady flow of people coming through. I had a great time experiencing the festival itself… but I can’t say the same about most of the food. The oysters I tried at the beginning were actually great. Fresh and flavorful. Next, I went for the stinky tofu. The first bite was manageable, but the second bite really hit me. The lingering smell and taste were intense, and I had to spit it out and clear my palate. I also grabbed some sausages, which were decent but nothing special. Then I tried lamb skewers. At first they tasted fine, but the more I chewed, the more sour they became. It almost tasted like the meat had turned. Finally, I ordered some xiao long bao. They had clearly been sitting in the bamboo steamer for a while, and the skin had become thick and tough. The filling was okay, but overall they tasted like reheated frozen dumplings. Even though the food was disappointing overall, being able to experience a once a decade festival like this made the trip worth it!
