Heroin was first synthesized from morphine in 1874 and marketed by Bayer, the German pharmaceutical company until it was made illegal in the U.S in 1924. Other forms of opiates similar to heroin, like oxycodone and fentanyl, continue to be available as prescribed pain medicines. Like other opiates, heroin is a sedative drug that slows body functioning and lessens emotional aches and pains. Most fatal overdoses are caused by combining heroin with alcohol or another drug. Symptoms of a heroin overdose include slow and shallow breathing, convulsions, coma and possible death. Sharing needles can spread deadly infectious diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis B and C. The chance of surviving an overdose, like that of surviving a heart attack, depends greatly on how fast one receives medical assistance. The life-saving medicine naloxone is relatively easy for most people to administer and reverses the effects of a heroin overdose. One critical safety measure is to discourage someone from using alone. This is one of the reasons that a growing number of health experts are advocating for safe consumption facilities, where people use heroin under medical supervision. These facilities often provide access to counseling and supportive health services. There has also been success in using medications like methadone and buprenorphine to help people stop or reduce heroin use.
