Josiah Gordon "Doc" Scurlock (1849–1929) was an American cowboy, farmer, writer, and fighter for justice, best known as a member of the Lincoln County Regulators during the New Mexico range wars. Born in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, he left medical studies to follow a life on the wild frontier. Riding alongside Billy the Kid, he survived the infamous Blazer’s Mill shootout and became a leader after McNab and Brewer were killed. Unlike many in the gang, Doc lived to tell the tale, eventually settling in Texas and dying of natural causes — a rare fate for an outlaw who once chased justice with a gun in hand. #DocScurlock #billythekid #outlawballad #wildwestlegends #countrystorytelling #lincolncountywar Ballad of Doc Scurlock – Gunman, Outlaw & Lincoln County Legend! LYRICS: (Verse 1) In Alabama land, back in ’49, A boy named Josiah, born without a sign. They called him “Doc,” though no doctor he’d be, From Tallapoosa he rode, chasing destiny. From books and medicine to life on the line, A pistol felt closer than a stethoscope sign. (Chorus) He was a gunman, an outlaw, a cowboy, a vigilante, In New Mexico’s heart, where the wind rode free and fancy. With the Lincoln County Regulators, brave and bold, He rode with Billy the Kid, in legends retold. (Verse 2) Down by the Rio Ruidoso’s flow, With Charlie Bowdre, making cheese for the show. But war came knocking, and the land turned red, When Tunstall fell, the fight for justice spread. Doc stood with the right, in the fires of the feud, A Regulator now, with a hard-riding mood. (Chorus) He was a gunman, an outlaw, a cowboy, a vigilante, In New Mexico’s heart, where the wind rode free and fancy. With the Lincoln County Regulators, brave and bold, He rode with Billy the Kid, in legends retold. (Verse 3) A bullet found him in the daylight’s glare, At Blazer’s Mill, but he was still there. He lived through the lead, rose through the pain, Led the crew when Dick and McNab were slain. He married María, a New Mexico bride, October of ’76, with love by his side. (Verse 4) With Billy he rode, through the storm and the fire, Survived every ambush, through dust and barbed wire. But he didn’t fall from some outlaw's hand, His life just faded in Eastland land. Died a natural death, July twenty-five, In Eastland City Cemetery he rests, his memory alive. (Chorus) He was a gunman, an outlaw, a cowboy, a vigilante, In New Mexico’s heart, where the wind rode free and fancy. With the Lincoln County Regulators, brave and bold, He rode with Billy the Kid, in legends retold. (Outro) From Alabama plains to the Texas sun, Doc Scurlock’s story still rides and runs. In Eastland’s grave, he sleeps in peace, But the legend of Doc will never cease. 🇺🇸 Dear country music friends 🤠, thank you for joining us on this heartfelt journey through the soul of America!
