José Carreras was born as Josep Maria Carreras i Coll on December 5, 1946, in Barcelona, Spain. From an early age, Carreras exhibited a passion for singing, influenced by his family's love for music. At the age of six, he performed "La donna è mobile" from Verdi's Rigoletto on Spanish National Radio. He began his formal musical education at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona. Carreras made his operatic debut at the age of 11, playing a small role in El retablo de Maese Pedro by Manuel de Falla. His professional debut came in 1970 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, where he played Flavio in Bellini's *Norma*, starring Montserrat Caballé. This performance marked the beginning of his illustrious career. Carreras quickly gained international recognition for his talent. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he performed in major opera houses around the world, including La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Royal Opera House in London. His repertoire includes over 60 roles, such as Don José in Bizet's *Carmen*, the title role in Verdi's *Don Carlo*, and Cavaradossi in Puccini's *Tosca*. In 1990, Carreras joined forces with Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti to form The Three Tenors. Their first concert, held at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, was a massive success and led to several subsequent tours and recordings. The Three Tenors brought opera to a wider audience and became a global sensation. In 1987, Carreras was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Despite being given a very low chance of survival, he fought the disease bravely and underwent extensive treatment, including a bone marrow transplant. His successful recovery was nothing short of miraculous, and he established the José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation to support leukemia research and patient care. After recovering from leukemia, Carreras resumed his singing career, although he limited his operatic performances and focused more on concerts and recitals. He has continued to perform worldwide and remains an influential figure in the music world. His foundation has raised millions of dollars for leukemia research and has helped countless patients and their families. Carreras has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, the Gold Medal of the Generalitat of Catalonia, and the Kennedy Center Honors. He has also been honored with honorary doctorates from several universities. José Carreras is celebrated not only for his exceptional vocal talent and contributions to opera but also for his philanthropic efforts in the fight against leukemia. His life and career continue to inspire many aspiring musicians and those battling serious illnesses. Source: [Classic FM - José Carreras](https://www.classicfm.com/artists/jos...)
