Cobh Nature-Based Solutions Pilot Project: A Town’s First Steps to Sustainable Urban Drainage

Cork County Council’s CPIU Unit is leading the design of the Cobh Town Centre Urban Design Plan. The plan will create beautiful, inclusive, and sustainable public spaces in Cobh and includes new raingardens and extensive urban greening in the town centre. Introducing nature-based solutions (NBS) will weave nature back into the fabric of the town with the aim of reducing flood risks, enhancing water quality, fostering biodiversity, and improving the built environment. The Cobh NBS Pilot Project is the first step to delivering sustainable urban drainage in Cobh, Co. Cork. In September 2023, the local community launched a demonstrator raingarden at East Beach in the town centre. This raingarden manages rainwater run-off from the adjacent road, filtering polluted water through special bioretention soils and releasing cleaner water into the sea. The next steps of the project involve NBS schemes at Five-Foot Way and Westbourne Place ahead of the wider Cobh Town Centre Urban Design Plan. Together, these projects will form significant environmental and sustainable design solutions which will propel Cobh to the forefront of sustainable urban regeneration in Irish towns. The Cobh NBS Pilot Project is an exciting collaboration between Cork County Council, The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, leading urban designers, environmental scientists, and the local community with a vision for a sustainable, prosperous, and people-centred town.
