Richard Terry, who was an expert on both English Tudor music as well as a great arranger of folk songs, calls this an "Old Capstan Shanty" and the words are almost certainly of American origin although opinions on the music are divided. As usual with a folk song, there are many different versions of the words; I'm singing it as printed in this particular edition. Terry's arrangement is for a four-part men's choir with baritone soloist which I think makes for a very rich sound that is surprisingly not too heavy. It's also one of my mother's favorite folk songs which is why I am posting it on this date.
