One woman and twenty-two physicians and nurses were charged with Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes. But this was just the tip of the iceberg. These crimes were made possible by the acquiescence of the mainstream medical profession that ranged from indifference to overt approval. A higher percentage of doctors were members of the Nazi party than for any other trade or profession. This brand-new podcast will explore the harrowing testimony given in court by survivors, and interviews with historians, psychologists and medical ethicists. We explore the descent of Nazi medicine into the abyss– first the racial medical theory of eugenics – leading to the T4 Forced Euthanasia Programme against the chronically ill (whom they termed ‘Useless Eaters’) with the first use of gas chambers – ending with physicians standing on the ramp at Auschwitz making ‘selections’ for the crematoria. We will hear about the sadistic, forced experiments performed by doctors on men, women and children – experiments to see how long humans could survive in extreme hypothermia or in extreme altitude without oxygen; tests of sulphonamide antibiotics where healthy leg muscles were repeatedly cut open; injections of malaria, tuberculosis, typhus, yellow fever, and hepatitis; sterilizations and other experiments on twin children. In a mixture of narration, dramatic reconstruction of archival material and interviews with experts, FIRST DO NO HARM asks the most important questions of all: how could doctors do such awful things, how did the medical profession allow it to happen, and could it ever happen again? The documentary will also explore the long road back to humanity that emerged from the trial - the ‘Nuremberg Code” that was developed to govern future ethical human research, which in turn developed into the Helsinki Declaration. Not that the story ends here - some European medical schools continue to teach from the bodies of victims murdered in the concentration camps. It is essential to restore knowledge of this ethical nightmare, to remind the next generation of how the slide into barbarism can begin, even among those trusted to be the kindest. This series will be an important educational tool for medical and nursing students and for the general public. FIRST DO NO HARM! A SIX-EPISODE PODCAST SERIES 1. The Descent: How the drive for ethnic purity led to eugenics and thus Aktion T4, the enforced euthanasia programme – the first use of gas chambers, an important step towards the Final Solution. 2. The Killers: The doctors directly tasked in the killing machine, including those who ran the enforced medical experiments in the camps – guided by pseudoscience and sadism – mostly heard through the survivors’ testimony. 3. The Bystanders: The perils of indifference and the shocking passivity of the mainstream medical community in Germany. 4. The Heroes: Both the doctors who worked in the ghettos and camps and the ‘Righteous Gentiles’ who refused to stay silent or do nothing. 5. From Nuremberg to Helsinki: How the abuses led the court to define the Nuremberg Code of Ethics and its lasting impact on medical ethics to this day. 6. Never Again? Which lessons have been learned and which forgotten in the 21st century. FIRST DO NO HARM is produced in partnership with the European Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care. It is written and directed by Jonathan Myerson and produced with Promenade Productions. The Medical Consultant is Yehuda Ginosar, Professor of Anesthesiology in Hadassah Hebrew University, Jerusalem and Washington University, St Louis, and serves on the Ethics Scientific Committee of the European Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care.
