Katafygio Vatsinidi - Foneas beach, Mani, Greece 08/09/2012 The "Katafygio Vatsinidi" (Vatsinidis shelter) is a beautiful cave in Southern Greece. It comprises of two large chambers, the first one of which contains a large subterranean lake of sea water while the second one contains 2-3 smaller lakes of the same kind. It can be reached by land through a relatively hidden entrance. It can also be reached by sea through two underwater corridors, one for each chamber; however, the dive is probably quite long and reaches deep (about 10-15m depth), so free-diving is probably too risky to attempt and one has to use scuba equipment to gain access to the cave by that way. On the ceiling of the first chamber there is a hole from where the sunlight comes inside the cave and is reflected on the lake waters. There is also an underwater passage that leads to the open sea, from where a beautiful electric-blue colour reaches the cave. The second chamber is completely dark, apart from an underwater passage to open waters similar to that of the first chamber. There are countless stalactites on the ceiling and the walls, composing an impressive decoration. Also, there are hundreds of bats hanging from the ceiling! The two chambers are connected through a narrow (1.5m wide) dark sea-water passage and, later on, through a rocky corridor that rises about 3-4m from the lake surface. So, one has to swim first and then attempt a rather risky climb in order to reach the second chamber. The experience, however, is definitely rewarding. Apart from the cave itself, which can be reached by land as well as by sea, there is also another cave that is only accessible by sea and is possibly connected to the Vatsinidis cave by an underwater passage. In this video, this was the first place my brother and I visited, before going inside the actual Katafygio Vatsinidis. All three chambers provide a spectacular view to anyone that decides to visit them. We really enjoyed the sense of excitement that got to us, while searching for them and exploring them! We will definitely go back there soon!! Christos Tsoumeleas Andreas Tsoumeleas
