In this video we explore how to approach Millbrook Roundabout in Southampton; a traffic light controlled SPIRAL roundabout. We give a brief re-cap on the Highway Code’s guidance on approaching roundabouts, highlighting the differences in approach between conventional and SPIRAL type roundabouts which use lane markings to guide us, rather than the clock face principle. We then drive all key routes around Millbrook Roundabout using dash cam style footage, pointing out: key road signs, floor lane markings, exit signal timings, and potential hazards (relating all this to the M S P S L sequence/system). A number of the routes are then driven again, this time filmed in ‘Mr Rusty’ from an over-the-shoulder perspective enabling you to watch the driver in terms of: head movements for mirror checks, signalling, gear change timing & technique (thumb up / thumb down palming technique), and steering technique (a blend of fixed grip and pull-push as appropriate). Basic spoken thoughts commentary pointing out key things the driver is considering, such as the positioning of the car relative to the large articulated container ship lorries using Dock Gate 20. “We commentate to concentrate” (on our driving) is a great line from the original RoadCraft* video and highlights how speaking your thoughts out loud can help to focus your concentration when driving (*new RoadCraft video out this month - October 2020).
