When there are many vigorous perennial weeds, a quick way to start growing is by using black plastic in the first year only. Details are in the video and these are the basics: 1 Cut weeds, to have an even surface - do this by early spring ideally. No digging except if there are woody plants like brambles. 2 Spread compost without cardboard underneath 3 Cover with black plastic for five to seven months. 4 In the correct season (late May here for squash), cut holes in the plastic with a trowel and pop in the rootballs of your plants. 5 If it's old plastic with some holes, that's fine and often you can use holes already there for the new plants. Use plastic that is fully light-excluding. In the UK, we have something called landscape fabric. It looks suitable, but allows 30% of light to pass through. Donβt use it for this! To verify the suitability of plastic for smothering weeds, hold it up to light - you should not see any! 00:00 Introduction 00:27 One method, using cardboard then compost 00:45 A quicker method, using plastic 01:19 I show an example and explain the method 02:04 Type of compost used 02:50 Multi-use of plastic 03:12 Compost then plastic, no cardboard - excluding light 03:52 Another reason to use plastic (warmth) and a disadvantage (slugs) - how to manage 04:52 Results from using this method 05:20 Maintenance of the growing area, weeding and watering 06:08 Using both methods 06:57 Six and a half months later - harvest results 07:26 What to do after the harvest, sowing white mustard as cover crop 07:57 Moving compost to create beds and paths, and adding more to feed soil 08:43 More on using white mustard, Sinapis alba as a cover crop 09:15 Outro Filmed June 2024 by Edward Dowding, edited by him February 2025.
