My journey with Kienbocks Disease - New Orleans Bassist Matthew Dethrow - Pyrocarbon Implant

I was diagnosed with Kienbocks disease this year. After misdiagnosis for 5 months, and 4 months of damaging physical therapy, I had x-rays that revealed a very rare genetic disease. Kienbocks is avascular necrosis of the Lunate carpal bone. It was confirmed around the same time that I celebrated my 40th birthday, and played the New Orleans Jazz Festival for the first time! Extreme highs and lows this year. It seems a lot of changes are happening at once, and I've learned to lean into it instead of against it. Glad I got to drive a stick shift again before this hit. Thankful I got to play 200+ shows a year for 8 years here in New Orleans before this hit. Extremely and eternally thankful for the love and support of my friends, family, and this amazing community of entertainers in New Orleans. It gets bad press, and there are a lot of problems here. But Ive never experienced such a rich culture, and such a beautifully resilient community that continues the vast history of loving life and celebrating the good.
