Why Does My Diesel Smoke So Badly Part 5: Turbo Boost Pressure Test

I have in my shop a very nice Mercedes W123 turbo diesel station wagon that has recently had a rebuilt engine installed. The engine runs great with fairly good power, but it smokes black smoke to high heaven when accelerating. What could be wrong? The owner who is a friend of mine finally admitted he really does not like driving it because he is embarrassed about the smoke coming out of the tail pipe. What does the turbo charger have to do with excess smoke and how can you determine if the turbo charger is working?
