(31 Mar 2025) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Paris - 31 March 2025 1. SOUNDBITE (English) Sylvie Corbet, The Associated Press: "This is the decision she feared the most: a French court barred Marine Le Pen from seeking public office for five years for embezzlement, with immediate effect. That means that even if she decides to appeal the verdict, such a move won’t suspend her ineligibility. That could rule her out of the next presidential race, scheduled in two years from now. The verdict came as a resounding defeat for Le Pen. She left the courtroom even before the sentence was read, when she understood she would be declared ineligible. Le Pen has been twice a runner-up to President Emmanuel Macron in previous presidential elections, and she was set to be a leading contender in the next one, especially since her far right party has gained strength in recent years. Le Pen and 24 other officials from her National Rally are accused using money intended for EU parliamentary aides to pay staff who worked instead for the party between 2004 and 2016." 2. French President Emmanuel Macron during presidential campaign STORYLINE: A French court has barred Marine Le Pen from seeking public office for five years for embezzlement in a hammer blow to the far-right leader’s presidential hopes. Although she can appeal the verdict, such a move won’t suspend her ineligibility and could rule her out of the 2027 presidential race. The court ruling was a political as well as a judicial temblor for France, hobbling one of the leading contenders to succeed President Emmanuel Macron at the end of his second and final term, scheduled to last into 2027. Le Pen has described such scenario as a “political death.” AP Video shot by Nicolas Garriga =========================================================== Clients are reminded to adhere to all listed restrictions and to check the terms of their licence agreements.
