Welcome to Snežnik Castle, one of Slovenia’s most enchanting historic sites. Nestled in the heart of the southwestern Lož Valley, near the settlement of Kozarišče, Snežnik Castle is surrounded by dense forests, serene ponds, and a beautifully landscaped park. History & Legacy The earliest mention of Snežnik dates to 1269, when it was under the ownership of Meinhard von Schneberg and part of the Patriarchate of Aquileia. Over the centuries, the property changed hands multiple times. In 1853, the castle and its surrounding lands were acquired by the German Prince Otto Viktor Schönburg‑Waldenburg. He passed it to his son, Georg, who oversaw extensive renovations. During World War II, the castle’s last caretaker, Leon Schauta, protected the estate and its interiors from destruction. After 1945, the castle was nationalized and used mainly as a hunting lodge for state officials. Following a major restoration completed in 2008, Snežnik Castle became part of the National Museum of Slovenia and now functions as a museum. Nature & Surroundings Snežnik Castle lies at the edge of the Lož Valley, bordered by vast forests and abundant wildlife — including bears, wolves, deer, lynx, and diverse bird species. Two springs, Obrh and Brezno, feed ponds below the castle, whose reflections contribute to its fairytale appeal. Walking paths and riding trails weave through the park, creating a scenic experience for visitors. The nearby Križna Cave (famous for its underground lakes) is often paired with Snežnik in day‑trip itineraries. #ShotOnLumix
