UNIDO - The Accelerated Agribusiness and Agro-industries Development Initiative (3ADI)

The initiative, called the 3ADI for "Accelerated Agribusiness and Agro-Industries Development Initiative" was launched in August 2010 in response to a request from the Commission of the African Union; The 3ADI partners are working on the ground in least developed countries to promote the expansion of local and international value chains that benefit the small producers and entrepreneurs, who create jobs and income, and who gradually transform the rural world to turn it into an attractive career proposition to the eyes of the youth in search of a better future. It is no longer a subsistence occupation carried out from generation to generation as a matter of tradition: it is a complex business with its technological, scientific, human resource, marketing, and accounting demands. It is predicated on driving an alignment of individual actions and priorities between public authorities responsible for emitting signals that are clear, consistent and observable by all; those responsible for transport, energy and communication infrastructure; the rural world, its skills and organization; the holders of scientific, technological and financial resources, domestic and foreign; the inputs, seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and advisory services providers; access to markets with its increasing requirements of quality, safety, standardization and traceability. The resources exist, the will is evident, especially at the core part of the value chain that is the processing segment; the question is to catalyze their convergence in a situation that provides attractive returns to all stakeholders, while addressing at the same time the most necessary of the Millennium Development Goals, reducing poverty and hunger worldwide.
