The Tattoos in HBO’s Task? Not Real. But You’d Never Know. 🤯

I spent most of 2024 working on HBO’S TASK and it’s finally out! Huge congratulations to the brilliant cast and the fantastic, primarily Philly-based crew for expertly bringing this wild world to life. TASK presents a perfect opportunity to shout out a division of the makeup department that doesn’t always get the spotlight – the team responsible for creating, applying and maintaining all the INCREDIBLE tattoos seen in the show. Those tattoos, while fake, look totally real and believable thanks to the unparalleled skill of those applying them, and all the research that went into making sure they told the right story for each character. You may never hear a character say they’ve spent time in prison, for example, but you’ll see that reflected in the ink they wear. In prep, Anna, the captain of the tattoo team, worked closely with Brad (writer), Meghan (costume designer who actually designed the hero Dark Hearts logo seen in the cover of this video), Adrienne and Bethany (handling all makeup needs beyond the tattoos), Diane (hair dept head), and of course the actors to figure out each characters look and determine what role tattoos would play in said look. To touch on one AD-specific thing, the tattoo process added a whole new layer to the scheduling process. Some actors were in the chair at 3AM (!!) to get their full look done. Huge props to our Key 2nd ADs Blair and Maggie, plus the basecamp all stars Chelsea, Ella and Angelina for solving that schedule puzzle daily and always keeping things running smoothly and efficiently. 🙌 Grateful to @petekramer and @annasmakeup for these amazing pics documenting the tattoo team’s incredible work and unending positivity. Brilliant actors. Fantastic crew. And a perfect opportunity to shine a light on one of the departments that play a huge part in creating the look of the characters in any show, which is the makeup department. Specifically, in TASKS’s case, those who design, apply and maintain all those incredible tattoos seen in the show. Anna Stachow the makeup department head worked closetly with Brad Ingelsby the writer, Meghan Kasperlik our incredible costume designer, Diane Dixon our hair department head, and of course the actors themselves to figure out what role tattoos would play in the character’s overall look. Then once we started shooting, to give you an idea of how much went into this process on a daily basis, if we had a 7am crew call, Anna and her team would greet the actors in the hair and makeup trailer at 3am to spend the next FOUR HOURS covering up the actor’s existing tattoos, their real life tattoos, applying the detailed character tattoos, then do the same thing to all the stunt doubles so everyone would match. Then once we’re on set, this army of artists would touch up all the tattoos as needed, keeping them looking real and not like something that got placed on their body that morning. Always, amazingly, doing all the above with the most upbeat, can-do attitude that definitatly have a positive impact on the set overall and on the actors as well, beyond what the tattoos already do to help the actor feel ready to step into their character’s skin and deliver the next level performances that you see in the show. Every department’s contribution makes a difference in the end product. How cool is that?
