Enslaved men not only made up a significant portion of the distilling workforce, but they often provided the expertise or provided crucial roles in the whiskey-making process. In the same way that white rock-and-roll stars, inventors, and cookbook authors often appropriated music, innovations, and recipes from enslaved black people, white distillery owners took credit for the whiskey and the billion-dollar process that it relies on today. There were many other men and women like Nearest Green, scattered around the South, who were not give their just due for the contributions they made.
