From the Racetrack to the Road - How Open Source Boosts Autonomous Vehicle Development

Keynote presentation by Alexander Wischnewski (driveblocks) at EclipseCon 2022. A team of researchers at the Technical University of Munich has showcased a software stack for fully autonomous driving on the racetrack at the Indianapolis and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway capable of speeds of up to 270kph and successful overtakes. This talk will present the technical architecture of the stack and the impact of open source projects such as ROS 2 on the success. Beyond the utilization of existing projects, there has been a strong spirit of collaboration between the race teams which has been coordinated as an open-source project. In addition, the talk will discuss how these learnings can be transferred to the development of vehicles operating on public roads and outline the opportunities of a collaborative and open development approach for autonomous driving.
