From the Good Friday Agreement to the Windsor Framework: Past, Present and Future

The 10 April 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement (GFA), an agreement which is responsible in large part for bringing peace in Northern Ireland. It was agreed when both the UK and Ireland were in the EU's single market and Customs Union. Brexit has challenged that settlement. The Northern Ireland Protocol, together with amendments proposed by the Windsor Framework, are intended to reconcile the UK's leaving the single market and the customs union with two seemingly incompatible objectives: one ensuring there is no North-South border, ie, between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland; the other ensuring there is no West-East border, ie, between the rest of the UK and NI. This seminar looked at the history, the current situation and future challenges around North Ireland and UK-EU relations.
